De início, o ente é tomado de maneira totalmente indeterminada, e, em verdade, como o ente do mundo, no qual o ser-aí é, e como o ente do próprio ser-aí. Esse ente só é descerrado de início em certa esfera. O homem vive em seu mundo circundante, que só é aberto em certos limites. A partir dessa orientação natural em seu mundo, emerge para ele algo assim como a ciência, que é uma elaboração do mundo existente e do próprio ser-aí em determinadas perspectivas. Mas o que está aí inicialmente ainda não é conhecido no sentido do saber. Ao contrário, a consciência tem quanto a isso uma determinada visão, δόξα, que considera o mundo tal como ele aparece e se mostra de saída, δοκει. Assim, formam-se no ser-aí natural, de saída, determinadas visões, opiniões sobre a vida e seu sentido. E o sofista e o orador movimen-tam-se nelas. No entanto, na medida em que a partir desse ser-aí natural abre-se o caminho para a pesquisa científica, essa pesquisa precisa atravessar de maneira penetrante justamente essas opiniões, essas determinações correntes, buscando o caminho até as coisas mesmas, de tal modo que estas se tornam mais determinadas, e ela precisa conquistar a partir daí os conceitos. Isso não é óbvio para o ser-aí cotidiano, e é difícil que ele toque no ente em seu ser — e isso precisamente para um povo como o grego, porém, cuja vida cotidiana estava atrelada à língua. O Sofista — e cada um dos diálogos — mostra Platão a caminho; ele mostra o rompimento das proposições fixas e o chegar à compreensão dos fenômenos; e ele mostra ao mesmo tempo como Platão precisa ficar parado e como ele não chega a penetrar.

Para que possamos ver Platão em seu trabalho e reconstruí-lo corretamente, carece-se da posição correta. Requisitaremos, (14) por isso, a Aristóteles uma informação sobre que ente ele mesmo e, com isso, Platão e os gregos tinham em vista e quais são para eles os modos de acesso a esse ente. Assim, a partir de Aristóteles, nós nos colocaremos na postura correta, na maneira correta de ver, para questionarmos o ente e seu ser. Só quando tivermos uma primeira orientação quanto a isso, estaremos diante da possibilidade de nos transpormos para o modo correto de consideração de um diálogo platônico e, transpostos para esse modo correto, de segui-lo em cada um de seus passos. A interpretação não tem nenhuma outra tarefa senão discutir uma vez mais, do modo mais originário possível, o diálogo. (p. 13-14)

At first, beings are taken wholly indeterminately, and specifically as the beings of the world in which Dasein is and as the beings which are themselves Dasein. These beings are at first disclosed only within a certain circuit. Man lives in his surrounding world, which is disclosed only within certain limits. Out of this natural orientation in his world, something like science arises for him, which is an articulation of Dasein's world, and of Dasein itself, in determinate respects. Yet what is most proximally there is Not yet known in the sense of a cognition; instead, consciousness has a determined view about it, a δόξα, which perceives the world as it for the most part appears and shows itself, δοκει. In this way certain views are initially formed in natural Dasein, opinions about life and its meaning. Both the sophist and the orator move in them. Yet insofar as scientific research gets underway from this natural Dasein, it must precisely penetrate through these opinions, these preliminary determinations, seek a way to the matters themselves, so that these become more determinate, and on that basis gain the appropriate concepts. For everyday Dasein this is not an obvious course to pursue, and it is difficult for everyday Dasein to capture beings in their Being — even for a people like the Greeks, whose daily life revolved around language. The Sophist — and every dialogue — shows Plato underway. They show him breaking through truisms and coming to a genuine understanding of the phenomena; and at the same time they manifest where Plato had to Stand still and could not penetrate.

In order to be able to watch Plato at work and to repeat this work correctly, the proper standpoint is needed. We will look for information from Aristotle about which beings he himself, and hence Plato and the Greeks, had in view and what were for them the ways of access to these beings. In this fashion we put ourselves, following Aristotle, into the correct attitude, the correct way of seeing, for an inquiry into beings and their Being. Only if we have a first orientation about that do we make it possible to transpose ourselves into the correct manner of considering a Platonic (10) dialogue and, once having been transposed, to follow it in each of its steps. The interpretation has no other task than to discuss the dialogue still once more as originally as possible. (p. 9-10)
