Se intentarmos meditar o que a celebração de hoje nos sugere, observaremos que nossa época se encontra ameaçada pela perda do enraizamento. Perguntamos então: o que acontece propriamente nesta época? O que a caracteriza?

A época que agora começa se tem denominado ultimamente de a era atômica. Sua característica mais aparente é a bomba atômica. Porém este sinal é muito superficial, pois que posteriormente nos damos conta de que a energia atômica pode também ser proveitosa para fins pacíficos. Por isso, hoje a física atômica e seus técnicos estão, em toda parte, tornando efetivo o aproveitamento pacífico da energia atômica mediante planejamentos de largo alcance. As grandes associações industriais dos países influentes, liderados pela Inglaterra, já calcularam que a energia atômica pode chegar a ser um negócio gigantesco. Vêem o negócio atômico como a nova felicidade. E a ciência atômica não se mantém à margem dessa expectativa. Proclama publicamente esta felicidade. Desse modo, no mês de julho deste ano, dezoito titulares do prêmio Nobel reunidos na ilha de Mainau declararam literalmente em um manifesto: “A ciência, ou seja, a ciência natural moderna  —  é um caminho que conduz a uma vida humana mais feliz”.

O que há nesta afirmação? Nasce de uma meditação? Pensa alguma vez nos vestígios do sentido da era atômica? Não. No caso de que nos deixemos satisfazer pela afirmação citada, a respeito da ciência, permaneceremos distanciados o máximo possível de uma meditação acerca da época presente. Por que? Porque esquecemos do refletir. Porque esquecemos do perguntar. Ao que se deve que a técnica científica tenha podido descobrir e pôr em liberdade novas energias naturais?

Deve-se a que, desde alguns séculos, o fato de ocorrer uma revolução em todas as representações cardeais (massgebenden Vorstellungen). O homem se translada, dessa forma, para uma outra realidade. Esta revolução radical de nosso modo de ver o mundo se consuma na filosofia moderna. Daí nasce uma posição totalmente nova do homem no mundo e com respeito ao mundo. Agora o mundo aparece como um objeto ao qual o pensamento calculador dirige seus ataques, aos quais nada doravante deve poder resistir. A natureza se converte, desse modo, em uma única estação gigantesca de combustível, em fonte de energia para a técnica e para a indústria modernas. Esta relação fundamentalmente técnica do homem em relação ao mundo como totalidade se desenvolveu, em primeiro lugar, no século XVII, e, além disso, na Europa e somente nela. Semelhante relação permaneceu durante muito tempo desconhecida nas demais partes da terra, como também, fora de todo estranha às anteriores épocas e destinos dos povos.

O poder oculto na técnica moderna determina a relação do homem com o que é. Este poder domina a terra inteira. Com isso, o homem começa então a se afastar dela para penetrar no espaço cósmico. Em apenas duas décadas foram descobertas fontes atômicas tão gigantescas que, em um futuro previsível a demanda mundial de energia de qualquer espécie estará satisfeita para sempre. A provisão imediata das novas energias já não dependerá de países determinados ou de continentes, como é o caso do carvão, do petróleo e da madeira dos bosques. Em um tempo previsível se poderão construir centrais nucleares em cada lugar da terra.

Sendo assim, a pergunta fundamental da ciência e da técnica contemporânea já não reza: de onde se obterão as quantidades suficientes de carburante e combustível? A pergunta decisiva é agora: de que modo poderemos dominar e dirigir as inimagináveis magnitudes de energia atômica e assegurar assim para a humanidade que estas energias gigantescas não se desloquem muito bruscamente  — mesmo que sem propósitos beligerantes  —  e venham a explodir em algum lugar aniquilando tudo?

Caso se alcance o domínio sobre a energia atômica, e se alcançará, começará então um desenvolvimento inteiramente novo do mundo técnico. O que hoje conhecemos como técnica cinematográfica e televisiva; como técnica do tráfego, especialmente a técnica aérea; como técnica de notícias; como técnica médica; como técnica de meios de nutrição, representa, presumivelmente, tão somente um grosseiro estado inicial. Ninguém pode prever as radicais transformações que se aproximam. Todavia, o desenvolvimento da técnica se efetuará cada vez com maior velocidade e não poderá ser detido em parte alguma. Em todas as regiões da existência o homem estará cada vez mais estreitamente cercado pelas forças dos aparatos técnicos e dos autômatos. Os poderes que, em todas as partes e em todas os momentos, desafiam, acorrentam, arrastam e acossam o homem sob alguma forma de utilização constante de utensílios técnicos ou no âmbito da instalação técnica, estes poderes há muito tempo que já não se encontram sob o alcance da vontade e da capacidade de decisão humanas, isto porque não foram feitos pelo homem.

Mas também é característico do novo modo, no qual se dá o mundo técnico, o fato de que seus sucessos sejam conhecidos e publicamente admirados pelo caminho mais rápido. Assim, hoje todo o mundo pode ler o que se diz sobre o mundo técnico em qualquer revista conduzida com competência, como também pode ouví-lo pelo rádio. Porém... uma coisa é ter ouvido ou lido algo, isto é, ter meramente notícia disto ou daquilo, outra coisa é reconhecer o ouvido ou o lido, isto é, deter-se em pensá-lo.

If we reflect upon what our celebration today suggests, then we must observe the loss of Man’s autochthony with which our age is threatened. And we ask: What really is happening in our age? By what is it characterized?

The age that is now beginning has been called of late the atomic age. Its most conspicuous Symbol is the atom bomb. But this symbolizes only the obvious; for it Was recognized at once that atomic energy can be used also for peaceful purposes. Nuclear physicists everywhere are busy with vast plans to implement the peaceful uses of atomic energy. The great industrial corporations of the leading countries, first of all England, have figured out already that atomic energy can develop into a gigantic business. Through this atomic business a new era of happiness is envisioned. Nuclear science, too, does Not Stand idly by. It publicly proclaims this era of happiness. Thus in July of this year at Lake Constance, eighteen Nobel Prize winners (50) stated in a proclamation: “Science (and that is modern natural science) is a road to a happier human life.”

What is the sense of this statement? Does it spring from reflection? Does it ever ponder on the meaning of the atomic age? No! For if we rest content with this statement of science, we remain as far as possible from a reflective insight into our age. Why? Because we forget to ponder. Because we forget to ask: What is the ground that enabled modern technology to discover and set free new energies in nature?

This is due to a revolution in leading concepts which has been going on for the past several centuries, and by which man is placed in a different world. This radical revolution in outlook has come about in modern philosophy. From this arises a completely new relation of man to the world and his place in it. The world now appears as an object open to the attacks of calculative thought, attacks that nothing is believed able any longer to resist. Nature becomes a gigantic gasoline station, an energy source for modern technology and industry. This relation of man to the world as such, in principle a technical one, developed in the seventeenth century first and only in Europe. It long remained unknown in other continents, and it was altogether alien to former ages and histories.

The power concealed in modern technology determines the relation of man to that which exists. It rules the whole earth. Indeed, already man is beginning to advance beyond the earth into outer space. In not quite twenty years, such gigantic sources of power have become known through the discovery of atomic energy that in the foreseeable future the world’s demands for energy of any kind will be ensured (51) forever. Soon the procurement of the new energies will no longer be tied to certain countries and continents, as is the occurrence of coal, oil, and timber. In the foreseeable future it will be possible to build atomic power stations anywhere on earth.

Thus the decisive question of science and technology today is no longer: Where do we find sufficient quantities of fuel? The decisive question now runs: In what way can we tame and direct the unimaginably vast amounts of atomic energies, and so secure mankind against the danger that these gigantic energies suddenly — even without military actions — break out somewhere, “run away” and destroy everything?

If the taming of atomic energy is successful, and it will be successful, then a totally new era of technical development will begin. What we know now as the technology of film and television, of transportation and especially air transportation, of news reporting, and as medical and nutritional technology, is presumably only a crude start. No one can foresee the radical changes to come. But technological advance will move faster and faster and can never be stopped. In all areas of his existence, man will be encircled ever more tightly by the forces of technology. These forces, which everywhere and every minute claim, enchain, drag along, press and impose upon man under the form of some technical contrivance or other — these forces, since man has not made them, have moved long since beyond his will and have outgrown his capacity for decision.

But this too is characteristic of the new world of technology, that its accomplishments come most speedily to be known and publicly admired. Thus today everyone will be (52) able to read what this talk says about technology in any competently managed picture magazine or hear it on the radio. But — it is one thing to have heard and read something, that is, merely to take notice; it is another thing to understand what we have heard and read, that is, to ponder.
