La distinction entre Nichten et verneinen — entre néantir et nier. Recoupe-t-elle la distinction de οὐκ et de μὴ en grec ? Si Nichten est du côté du οὐκ grec, alors Nicht veut (451) dire le vide total (nihil negativum) ; l’étant est tout simplement nié : il n’y a pas d’étant. Si au contraire on entendait le nicht de Nichten au sens de μὴ, il voudrait dire un certain manque du côté de l’être. Mais si l’être et le rien sont le même, le rien en question ne peut signifier une privation. Il ne saurait donc être question de comprendre Nichten de façon privative-négative. Il s’agit de quelque chose d’autre, de tout à fait propre et particulier.

Gardons toujours en vue la thèse:

Être: Rien: Même

Rien est la caractéristique de l’être. Ce n’est pas l’étant — mais en un sens tout à fait différent de la proposition: l’étant n’est pas (qui serait une proposition ontique). Dire au contraire: le rien caractérise l’être, est un énoncé ontologique. Vu à partir de l’horizon ontique, l’être ce n’est justement pas de l’étant; vu à partir des catégories, cela n’est pas. Autrement dit: dans la mesure où le rien et son néantir ne sont pas compris négativement, l’être est quelque chose de tout à fait autre que l’étant. L’important dans la formule participiale néantissant, c’est que le participe indique une certaine « activité » de l’être, par laquelle seulement l’étant est. On peut parler de provenance, à condition d’écarter toute nuance ontique-causale : il y a survenue de l’être, comme condition de l’avènement de l’étant: l’être laisse être l’étant.

Comprendre ici que le sens le plus profond de être, c’est laisser (lassen). Laisser être l’étant. C’est cela le sens non causal, celui du « lassen » de Temps et Être . Ce « laisser » est quelque chose de fondamentalement différent de « faire ». La tendance du texte Temps et Être serait d’entreprendre de penser ce « laisser » plus originellement encore comme « donner ».

Ce donner est le geben de l’expression: es gibt (traduite (452) habituellement par « il y a » — à propos de quoi Heidegger précise que « il y a » est trop ontique, en tant que faisant signe vers une présence d’étants).

Es gibt, c’est en latin: habet. Construit avec l’accusatif, cela exprime une relation ontique.

Il s’agit ici de travailler à lever les possibilités de confusion. Car ainsi qu’on vient de le voir, la locution Es gibt n’est pas à l’abri d’une entente ontique. Remarquons donc:

1° On est tenté d’entendre es gibt au sens de « cela laisse entrer en présence ». Et le donner du « es gibt » est compris ontiquement dans l’accentuation du entrer-en-présence (Anwesen-lassen). Ainsi, quand je dis en français : il y a des truites dans ce ruisseau, le « il y a » est entendu en direction de la présence des étants, de leur approche dans la présence — et « laisser entrer en présence » est entendu à la limite comme « faire entrer en présence ». Ainsi entendu, le es gibt se comprend ontiquement, en sorte que l’accent porte sur le fait d’être.

2° Mais si le « es gibt » est pensé en direction d’une interprétation du lassen lui-même, alors l’accentuation change.

Ce n’est plus l’entrée en présence qui est soulignée, mais le laisser lui-même. Es gibt signifie alors strictement: « laisser l’entrer en présence. » Alors ce n’est plus du tout la présence de l’étant qui appelle le regard, mais cela sur le fond de quoi elle se détache en le masquant — le laisser lui-même, la donation du « donner qui ne donne que sa donation, mais qui, se donnant ainsi, pourtant se retient et se soustrait » (Temps et Être, dans ce volume, p. 203).

La possibilité s’offre alors peut-être de sortir de l’inextricable difficulté qu’on a à dire « l’impossible »: « l’être est ». Peut-être peut-on dire plutôt: « es gibt Sein » — « cela donne être », au sens de: « cela laisse être. »

(453) Disons, pour résumer (cf. le Protocole, ibid., p. 243) que ce « laisser être » admet trois acceptions.

La première qui fait signe vers cela qui est (vers l’étant). A cette première acception s’opposerait celle où l’attention est attirée moins vers ce qu’il y a que vers Ventrée en présence elle-même. Il s’agit alors d’une interprétation de l’être telle que la donne la métaphysique.

Mais, au cœur de cette seconde accentuation, prend place la troisième, où l’accent est cette fois décidément mis sur le laisser lui-même, qui laisse l’entrer en présence. Laissant (délaissant?) l’entrée en présence, c’est-à-dire laissant l’être, cette troisième accentuation fait signe vers l’ἐποχή de l’être. Dans cette troisième acception, on est placé devant l’être en tant qu’être, et non plus devant l’une des figures de sa destination.

Quand l’accentuation est: Anwesen lassen (traduction forcée: « l’entrer dans la présence, le laisser »), le nom même de l’être n’a plus lieu d’être. Le laisser est alors le pur donner, qui lui-même renvoie au Es (au Cela) qui donne, ce qui est compris comme l’Ereignis.

On the distinction between negating (Nichten) and denying (Verneinen): is this covered by the Greek distinction between οὑκ and μὴ? If negating belongs to the Greek οὑκ, then nothing signifies total nothingness (nihil negativum); beings are simply denied: there are no beings. If, on the contrary, one understands the nothing in negating according to the meaning of μὴ, then it should indicate a certain defect in regard to being. But if being and nothing are the same, then the nothing in question cannot signify a lack. Therefore, one should Not understand negating in a privative-negative way. It is a matter of something other, completely specific and unique.

We keep the guiding statement ever in view:

Being : Nothing : The Same

Nothing is a characteristic of being. It is not a being, but this in a manner that is thoroughly different from the sentence: The being is not (which would be an ontic proposition). On the contrary, one says: the nothing characterizes being, this is therefore an ontological proposition. Viewed from the ontic horizon, being is precisely not some being; viewed from the categories, it is not. Otherwise said: insofar as the nothing and its negating are not understood negatively, being is something entirely other than a being. It is essential to the participle form “nihilating” (nichtend) that the participle show a determinate “activity” of being, through which alone the particular being is. One can name it an origin, assuming that all ontic-causal overtones are excluded: it is the event (Ereignis) of being as condition for the arrival of beings: being lets beings presence.

It is a matter here of understanding that the deepest meaning of being is letting. Letting the being be, this is the non-causal meaning of “letting” in “Time and Being.” This “letting” is something fundamentally different from “doing.” The text “Time and Being” attempted to think this “letting” still more originarily as “giving.”

The giving meant here speaks in the expression Es gibt [“There is”] (usually translated by “Il y a,” regarding which Heidegger explained that “Il y a” is too ontic insofar as it refers to the presence of beings).

“Es gibt”:

Es gibt, in Latin: habet. Constructed with the accusative it expresses an ontic relation.

Here one must take pains to avoid possible errors. For as we have just seen, the expression “Es gibt” is not safe from an ontic conception. We note therefore:

1) It is tempting to understand “Es gibt” as meaning “It lets (something) come to presence.” And through this emphasis upon letting come to presence, the giving in “Es gibt” is ontically conceived. Hence, if I say in French: there are trout in this stream (Il y a des truites dans ce ruisseau), the “Il y a” is understood in regard to the presence of beings, to their presenting (Anwesung) – and the “to let come to presence” is already on the verge of being understood as “to make present.” Heard in this way, the “Es gibt” is grasped ontically so that the emphasis lies upon the fact of being.

2) But if the “Es gibt” is thought in regard to an interpretation of the letting itself, then the emphasis changes.

Presence is no longer emphasized, but rather the letting itself. “Es gibt” then has the precise meaning: “to let the presencing.” Thus it is no longer the presence of a being which draws one’s attention, but the ground which that being covers over, in order to make itself independent from it: letting as such, the gift of a “giving which gives only its gift, but in the giving holds itself back and withdraws.”97

Now a possibility is perhaps offered to find a way out of the insoluble difficulty which here tempts one to say “the impossible”: “Being is.” Perhaps one should sooner say, “There is being” [“Es gibt Sein”], in the sense of, “it lets being” [“Es läßt Sein”].

We can say, in summary,98 that three meanings can be emphasized in “letting-be.”

The first refers to that which is (to the being). Over against this first sense, there stands another sense for which the attention is drawn less towards what is given (towards what is), than towards the presencing itself. It then concerns an interpretation of being of the sort given by metaphysics.

Within this second emphasis, however, a third has its place, where the stress is now decisively placed upon the letting itself, that which allows the presencing. Since it allows (releases?) presencing, which means that it allows being, this third emphasis points to the ἐποχή of being. In this third meaning, one stands before being as being, and no longer before one of the forms of its destiny.

If the emphasis is: to let presencing, there is no longer room for the very name of being. Letting is then the pure giving, which itself refers to the it (das Es) that gives, which is understood as Ereignis.

Sein: Nichts: Selbes

Nichts ist die Kennzeichnung des Seins. Es ist nicht das Seiende, – dies aber in einem Sinn, der durchaus verschieden ist von dem Satz: Das Seiende ist nicht (was eine ontische Aussage wäre). Sagt man dagegen: das Nichts kennzeichnet das Sein, so ist das eine ontologische Aussage. Vom Horizont des Ontischen aus gesehen ist das Sein gerade nicht etwas Seiendes; von den Kategorien aus gesehen ist es nicht. Anders gesagt: insofern das Nichts und sein Nichten nicht negativ verstanden Werden, ist das Sein etwas ganz und gar Anderes als das Seiende. An der Partizipialform nichtend ist wesentlich, daß das Partizip eine bestimmte »Tätigkeit« des Seins anzeigt, durch die allein das Seiende ist. Man kann es Ursprung nennen, vorausgesetzt daß aller ontisch-kausale Beiklang ausgeschlossen ist: es ist das Ereignis des Seins als Bedingung der Ankunft des Seienden: das Sein läßt das Seiende anwesen.

Es kommt hierbei darauf an, zu verstehen, daß der tiefste Sinn von Sein das Lassen ist. Das Seiende sein-lassen. Das ist der nicht-kausale Sinn von »Lassen« in »Zeit und Sein«.

Dies »Lassen« ist etwas von »machen« grundlegend Verschiedenes. Der Text »Zeit und Sein« unternimmt den Versuch, dies »Lassen« noch ursprünglicher als »Geben« zu denken.

Das Hier gemeinte Geben spricht in dem Ausdruck Es gibt (gewohnheitsmäßig durch »II y a« übersetzt, Wozu Heidegger (364) erklärt, daß »II y a« zu ontisch ist, sofern es auf eine Anwesenheit von Seienden deutet).

Es gibt lautet lateinisch: habet. Mit dem Akkusativ konstruiert drückt es eine ontische Beziehung aus,

Hier muß man sich bemühen, Mögliche Irrtümer auszuschließen. Denn Wie wir eben gesehen Haben, ist der Ausdruck „Es gibt‟ nicht vor einer ontischen Auffassung geschützt. Beachten wir also:

1) Man ist versucht, „Es gibt‟ in der Bedeutung von »Es läßt an Wesen« zu verstehen. Und das Geben im „Es gibt‟ wird durch die Betonung des Anwesen-lassens ontisch aufgefaßt. So wird, wenn Ich französisch Sage: es gibt Forellen in diesem Bach, das »II y a« im Hinblick auf die Anwesenheit der Seienden verstanden, auf ihre Anwesung, – und das »Anwesen lassen« wird schon an der Grenze zu »Anwesen machen« verstanden. So gehört wird das „Es gibt‟ ontisch begriffen, so daß die Betonung auf der Tatsache des Seins liegt.

2) Wird das „Es gibt‟ aber im Hinblick auf eine Auslegung des Lassens Selbst gedacht, dann ändert sich die Betonung.

nicht mehr die Anwesenheit wird betont, sondern das Lassen selbst. „Es gibt‟ hat dann die genaue Bedeutung: »Lassen das Anwesen.« nun zieht überhaupt nicht mehr die Anwesenheit des Seienden den Blick auf sich, sondern Dasjenige, auf Grund dessen sie sich verselbständigt, indem sie es verdeckt, – das Lassen selbst, die Gabe des »Gebens, das nur seine Gabe gibt, sich selbst jedoch in solchem Geben verbirgt und entzieht«.

Jetzt bietet sich vielleicht eine Möglichkeit, aus der unlösbaren Schwierigkeit herauszufinden, die einem der Versuch bereitet, »das Unmögliche« zu sagen: »das Sein ist«. Vielleicht darf man eher sagen: »Es gibt Sein« im Sinn von: »Es läßt 103 Sein«.

Zusammenfassend können wir sagen, daß das »Sein-lassen« in drei Bedeutungen betont werden kann.

Die erste deutet auf das, Was ist (auf das Seiende). Dieser ersten Bedeutung gegenüber stünde jene, in der das Augenmerk weniger auf das, was es gibt (was ist), gerichtet ist als auf das Anwesen selbst. Es handelt sich dann um eine Auslegung des Seins von der Art, wie die Metaphysik sie gibt.

Aber im Innersten dieser zweiten Betonung hat die dritte ihren Ort, wo der Ton nun entschieden auf das Lassen selber gelegt wird, das das Anwesen läßt. Da es das Anwesen läßt (entläßt?), das heißt, da es läßt das Sein, deutet diese dritte Betonung auf die ἐποχή des Seins. In dieser dritten Bedeutung steht man dem Sein als Sein gegenüber und nicht mehr einer der Gestalten seines Geschicks.

Wenn die Betonung lautet: Anwesen lassen, ist sogar für den Namen Sein kein Raum mehr. Das Lassen ist dann das reine Geben, das selbst auf das Es, das gibt, zurückdeutet, das als das Ereignis verstanden wird.
