Foi assim que Husserl observou, magnânimo mas, no fundo, reprovador, como eu, fora dos meus cursos e aulas práticas, estudava semanalmente com grupos de Seminário de alunos mais avançados, as Investigações Lógicas. Era sobretudo para mim próprio que a preparação deste trabalho era frutuosa. Foi então – no inicio mais movido por um pressentimento do que por uma inteligência clara do assunto – que aprendi o seguinte: aquilo que para a fenomenologia dos actos de consciência se realiza como o manifestar-se do fenómeno, foi mais originariamente pensado por Aristóteles e por todo o pensar e existência gregos, enquanto ἀλήθεια, o não-estar-encoberto do que está presente, como o seu desencobrimento, o seu mostrar-se. O que as investigações fenomenológicas tinham encontrado, de novo, como atitude portadora do pensar, era afinal o traço fundamental do pensamento grego, se não mesmo de toda a filosofia enquanto tal.

E quanto mais claro se me tornava esta noção, com tanta maior força se me colocava a questão: de onde vem e como se determina, segundo o princípio da fenomenologia, aquilo que deve ser experimentado como a “coisa ela mesma”? (die Sache selbst) Será ela a consciência e a sua objectualidade, ou antes o ser do ente no seu não-estar-encoberto e no seu encobrimento?

Assim fui levado ao caminho da pergunta pelo Ser, esclarecido pela atitude fenomenológica, num sentido renovado e diferente daquele que me guiava quando me inquietavam os problemas colocados pela dissertação de Brentano. Mas o caminho do questionamento seria mais longo do que eu teria podido supor. Requeria muitas pausas, rodeios e desvios. Aquilo que procurei fazer nas primeiras lições de Friburgo, depois nas de Marburgo, não mostra senão indirectamente esse caminho.

Thus Husserl watched me in a generous fashion, but at the bottom in disagreement, as I worked on the Logical Investigations every week in special seminars with advanced students in addition to my lectures and regular seminars. Especially the preparation for this work Was fruitful for me. There I learned one thing — at first rather led by surmise than guided by founded insight: What occurs for the phenomenology of the acts of consciousness as the self-manifestation of phenomena is thought more originally by Aristotle and in all Greek thinking and existence as aletheia, as the unconcealed ness of what-is present, its being revealed, its showing itself. That which phenomenological investigations rediscovered as the supporting attitude of thought proves to be the fundamental trait of Greek thinking, if Not indeed of philosophy as such.

The more decisively this insight became clear to me, the more pressing the question became: Whence and how is it determined what must be experienced as “the things themselves“ in accordance with the principle of phenomenology? Is it consciousness and its objectivity or is it the Being of beings in its unconcealed ness and concealment?

Thus I was brought to the path of the question of Being, illumined by the phenomenological attitude, again made uneasy in a different way than previously by the questions prompted by Brentano's dissertation. But the path of questioning became longer than I suspected. (80) It demanded many stops, detours and wrong paths. What the first lectures in Freiburg and then in Marburg attempted shows the path only indirectly.
