Sensorium é compreendido como tato (Fühlung), isto é, ter sentimento em sentido bem lato. E quiçá como ter sentimento de algo, tatear no sentido de ser tocado, depois como ter sentimento para algo, no sentido de sentir ativo (Vorfühlen), de rastrear pelo tato (Erspüren). Sensorium é portanto sentimento ou tatear num duplo sentido: 1) Acolher; 2) Rastrear, seguir os vestígios. Assim, sensorium não é mera receptividade ou, compreendido como tal, não é mera passividade; ao contrário, no todo da sensorialidade há esse direcionamento duplo, contraposto, de que o sentimento se expande, essa expansão porém não é mera dispersão, mas ao mesmo tempo um recolher no interior. Messe sentido Herder usa a expressão interior, e com isso tem em mente um voltar-se para a alma.

Sensorium ist verstanden als Fühlung, d.h. Gefühl haben in ganz weitem Sinn. Und zwar einmal als Gefühl haben von etwas, spüren im Sinn des Angegangenwerdens, dann als Gefühl haben für etwas, im Sinn des Vorfühlens, des Arspürens. Sensorium ist also Fühlung oder Spüren in einem doppelten Sinn: 1. vernehmen, 2. nachspüren, auf der Spur sein. Sensorium ist damit nicht bloße Rezeptivität oder, als solche gefaßt, nicht bloße Passivität, es liegt vielmehr in der Sinnlichkeit im Ganzen diese Doppel-und Gegenrichtung, daß die Fühlung sich ausbreitet, diese Ausbreitung aber nicht bloße Zerstreuung ist, sondern zugleich ein Hereinnehmen in das Innere. In diesem Sinne braucht Herder den Ausdruck innig und meint damit eine Wendung auf die Seele zu.
