Por que é que, na preparação da questão acerca da verdade do ser, pensa-se na essência da morte? (Cf. Ser e tempo.) Porque (192) só o homem tem a morte e morre, de tal modo que ele também se mostra como sendo o único a respectivamente precisar e poder morrer a sua morte.

O homem, porém, tem a morte porque só o homem é apropriado em meio à relação com o ser pelo ser.

O ser, contudo, é, como acontecimento apropriativo, dotado de uma essência marcada pela despedida. Na morte temos a possibilidade extrema da ligação com o ser.

O que é a morte? Despedindo-se o a-bismo em relação ao início.

Ainda não sabemos nada sobre a essência conforme ao ser da morte, porque nós, pensando metafisicamente, tomamos o homem como ζῷον e explicamos a morte a partir da oposição à vida e como transição para a “vida” eterna. Pensar em termos da história do seer: a partir do seer o ser-aí, como ser-aí a morte.

A morte é inicial, o que significa que ela precisa ser pensada em sintonia com o caráter de ser-aí a partir do acontecimento apropriativo.

A morte é a consumação da insistência no ser-aí, a morte é o sacrifício.

O fim – no sentido da consumação – refere-se ao ser-aí (não à vida).

A essência em termos de despedida diz respeito à despedida do ente comto tal, despedida essa, porém, que se mostra como o preenchimento da ligação com o seer.

A morte não se essencia apenas quando o homem está morto, mas quando a despedida na insistência do ser-aí ganha sua consumação. A morte também não se essencia, por isso, quando o homem “morre”, mas o morrer só é a extinção da “vida”.

A morte é o ponto de partida insistente do ser-aí na proximidade da clareira do seer.

A morte “é” rara e velada. Com frequência, ela não é menos obstruída e deslocada pelo morrer do que pela mera vida. A morte é a proximidade mais pura do homem em relação ao ser (e, por isso, em relação ao “nada”).

Nós desertificamos a essência abismante, que acontece apropriativamente como despedida, da morte, quando procuramos (194) o acontecimento apropriativo e o ser do homem contabilizar aquilo que haveria “depois” dela. Desse modo, rebaixamos a morte a uma travessia nula. Não pressentimos nada do fundamento da dor na morte, dor essa que não “é” uma dor entre outras, mas o abismo essenciante da dor como a essência da experiência do ser.

A morte é o ponto de partida em direção à pura proximidade do seer. Sua essência como “fim” não pode ser pensada de maneira calculadora, nem como “cifras” da vida nem como começo de outra vida. Assim, desviamos o olhar da essência da morte e não compreendemos o “fim” em sintonia com o ser-aí, isto é, na ligação única com a clareira do seer.

A lei da inevitabilidade do seer preenche-se puramente na morte.

A morte torna, ao que parece, todos iguais; a observância dessa aparência é a maior ilusão possível em relação a sua essência e se nutre da ignorância sobre a unicidade da morte. Essa opinião é o consolo barato daqueles que desvirtuaram a morte e, para tanto, se servem do modo de falar da “majestade da morte”.

Why did the preparation (cf. Being and Time) for the question of the truth of being think about the essence of death? Because humans alone die and have death, such that they therefore also in each case can and must die their own death.

But humans have death because they alone are adopted by being into a relation to being.

Yet being, as the event, is of a departure-like essence. In death resides the extreme possibility of the relation to being.

What is death? The departure-like abyss with respect to the beginning.

We still know nothing of the ontological essence of death, because we think metaphysically, take the human being as a ζῷον, and explain death, from the opposition to “life,” as the transition to eternal “life.” Thinking in terms of the history of beyng: from beyng, Da-sein; as Da-sein, death.

Death is to be thought inceptually, i.e., out of the event and with respect to Da-sein.

Death is the consummation of the steadfastness in Da-sein; death is sacrifice.

The end—in the sense of consummation—relates to Da-sein (not to life).

The departure-like essence concerns the departure from beings as such; yet this departure is the fulfillment of the relation to beyng.

Death essentially occurs not when someone is dead, but when the departure in the steadfastness of Da-sein attains its consummation. Therefore death also does not essentially occur when someone “dies,” if dying is merely the extinguishing of “life.”

Death is the steadfast going out of Da-sein into the nearest nearness of the clearing of beyng.

Death “is” rare and concealed. It is often no less prevented and deformed by dying than by sheer living. Death is the purest nearness of the human being to being (and thus to “nothingness”).

We devastate the abyssal, departure-like, event-related essence of death if we seek to calculate what might be “after” it. Thereby we degrade death to a null passageway. We surmise nothing of the ground of pain in death, a pain that is not “one” pain among others, but is the essentially occurring abyss of pain, taking pain as the essence of the experience of being.

Death is the going out into the pure nearness of beyng. Its essence as “ending” must not be thought calculatively, either as “cipher” for life nor as start of another life. In that way, we avert our gaze from the essence of death and do not understand “ending” in terms of Dasein, i.e., in the unique relation to the clearing of beyng.

The law of the unavoidability of beyng is purely fulfilled in death.

Death appears to make everything equal; the result of this appearance is the great illusion about its essence and the entrenchment of the lack of a presentiment regarding the uniqueness of death. That opinion is the facile comfort of those who have degraded death and for that purpose avail themselves of expressions such as the “majesty of death.”

Warum wird in der Vorbereitung der Frage nach der Wahrheit des Seins an das Wesen des Todes gedacht? (vgl. »Sein und Zeit«) Weil der Mensch allein den Tod hat und stirbt, so daß er deshalb erst auch jeweils seinen Tod sterben muß und kann.

Der Mensch aber hat den Tod, weil der Mensch allein in den Bezug zum Sein vom Sein angeeignet ist.

Das Sein aber ist als das Ereignis abschiedlichen Wesens. Im Tod ist die äußerste Möglichkeit des Seinsbezugs.

Was ist der Tod? Abschiedlich der Ab-grund zum Anfang.

Noch wissen wir nichts vom seinshaften Wesen des Todes, weil wir, metaphysisch denkend, den Menschen als ζῷον nehmen und den Tod aus dem Gegensatz zum »heben« und als Übergang zum ewigen »Leben« erklären. Sevnsgeschichtlieh denke: aus dem Seyn das Da-sein, als Da sein den Tod.

Der Tod ist anfänglich und d. h. aus dein Ereignis da-seitishait zu denken.

Der Tod ist die Vollendung der Inständigkeit irn Da-sein, der Tod ist das Opfer.

Das Ende – im Sinne der Vollendung – bezieht sich auf das Da-sein (nicht auf das Leben).

(194) Das abschiedliche Wesen geht, den Abschied vom Seienden als solchen an, welcher Abschied aber die Erfüllung des Bezugs zum Seyn ist.

Der Tod west, nicht dann, wenn der Mensch tot ist, sondern wenn der Abschied in der Inständigkeit des Da seins in seine Vollendung kommt. Der Tod west daher auch nicht dann, wenn der Mensch »stirbt«, sofern das Sterben nur das Verlöschen des »Lebens« ist.

Der Tod ist der instand liebe Ausgang des Daseins in die nächste Nähe der Lichtung des Seyns.

Der Tod »ist« selten und verborgen. Oft wird er durch das Sterben nicht weniger verwehrt und verunstaltet wie durch das bloße Leben. Der Tod ist die reinste Nähe des Menschen zum Sein (und deshalb zum »Nichts«).

Wir verwüsten das abgründende, abschiedlich ereignishafte Wesen des Todes, wenn wir ausrechnen wollten, was »nach« ihm sei. Dergestalt erniedrigen wir den Tod zu einem nichtigen Durchgang. Wir ahnen nichts vorn Grund des Schmerzes im Tod, welcher Schmerz nicht »ein« Schmerz unter anderen ist, sondern der wesende Abgrund des Schmerzes als des Wesens der Erfahrung des Seins.

Der Tod ist der Ausgang in die reine Nähe des Seyns. Sein Wesen als »Ende« darf nicht rechnend gedacht werden, weder als »Chiffren« des Lebens, noch als Beginn eines anderen Lebens. So blikken wir vom Wesen des Todes weg und verstehen das »Ende« nicht daseinshaft, d. h. im einzigen Bezug zur Lichtung des Seyns.

Das Gesetz der Unabwendbarkeit des Seyns erfüllt sich rein im Tod.

Der Tod macht dem Anschein nach alle gleich; die Befolgung dieses Scheins ist die große Täuschung über sein Wesen und nährt die Ahnungslosigkeit über die Einzigkeit der Tode. Jene Meinung ist der billige Trost derer, die den Tod entwürdigt, haben und dazu sich der Redensart von der »Majestät des Todes« bedienen.
