Pensar é a atenção para o essencial. Em tal atenção essencial reside o saber essencial. O que usualmente chama-se de “saber” é estar informado acerca de uma certa questão e de suas relações factuais. Graças a estes conhecimentos “dominamos” as coisas. Este “saber” de dominação se dirige ao ente cada vez dado, à sua estrutura e à sua utilidade. Um tal “saber” se apodera do ente, “domina”-o e, com isso, vai sempre para além do ente, ultrapassando-o, constantemente. O caráter do saber essencial é inteiramente diferente. Ele se volta para o que o ente é no seu fundamento - para o ser. O “saber” essencial não domina sobre o que lhe é dado saber, mas é tocado por ele. Por exemplo, só para tomar um caso entre outros, cada “ciência” é um conhecimento de dominação, um sobrepujar e um ultrapassar, quando não simplesmente um passar por cima do ente. (16) Isso se realiza no modo da objetivação. Em contrapartida, o saber essencial, a atenção, é um retroceder diante do ser. Num tal retroceder vemos e percebemos essencialmente mais, ou seja, algo totalmente diferente do produto do procedimento notável da ciência moderna. Pois esta última é sempre um assalto técnico ao ente e uma intervenção tendo em vista uma “orientação” ativa, “produtiva”, operosa e comercial. Em contraposição, a atenção marcada pelo pensamento permanece uma atenção para uma exigência que não provém de fatos isolados e de eventos da realidade, nem atinge o homem nas razões periféricas de suas ocupações cotidianas. Somente então, quando esta exigência do ser, e não apenas alguma objetividade referida à multiplicidade do ente, se dirige a nós na palavra de Parmênides, o conhecimento de suas “proposições” terá alguma justificação. Sem a percepção desta exigência todo o cuidado que possamos empregar na elucidação deste pensar transcorre no vazio. A sequência com a qual explicitaremos os fragmentos individuais será determinada pela interpretação dos pensamentos condutores. Uma tal interpretação se baseia nas diversas explicitações e só passo a passo pode vir à luz. (p. 16-17)

To think is to heed the essential. In such heedfulness essential knowing resides. What we usually call "knowing" is being acquainted with something and its qualities. In virtue of these cognitions we "master" things. This mastering "knowledge" is given over to a being at hand, to its structure and its usefulness. Such "knowledge" seizes the being, "dominates" it, and thereby goes beyond it and constantly surpasses it. The character of essential knowing is entirely different. It concerns the being in its ground — it intends Being. Essential "knowing" does not lord it over what it knows but is solicitous toward it. For instance. (4)  to take just one example, every "science" is a cognitive mastering, an outdoing, and a surpassing, if indeed not a complete bypassing, of a being. All of which occurs in the manner of objectivization. Versus this, essential knowing, heedfulness, is a retreat in face of Being. In such retreating we see and we perceive essentially more, namely something quite different from the product of the remarkable procedure of modern science. For the latter is always a technical attack on a being and an intervention for purposes of an "orientation" toward acting, "producing," wheeling and dealing. Thoughtful heedfulness, in contrast, is attention to a claim that does not arise from the separate facts and events of reality and does not concern man in the superficiality of his everyday occupations. Only when this claim of Being, and not some objectivity or other out of the multiplicity of beings, addresses us in the word of Parmenides will the knowledge of his "propositions" have any justification. Without paying attention to this claim, whatever care we might contrive in the clarification of his thinking occurs in a void. (p. 3-4)

Denken ist die Achtsamkeit auf das Wesenhafte. In ihr besteht das wesentliche Wissen. Was man gewöhnlich »Wissen« nennt, ist das Sichauskennen in einer Sache und ihren Sachverhalten. Kraft dieser Kenntnisse »meistern« wir Sachen. Dieses meisternde »Wissen« geht auf das jeweilige Seiende, seine Einrichtung und Ausnutzung. Solches »Wissen« bemächtigt (5) sich des Seienden, »beherrscht« es und ist dadurch darüber hinaus und überholt es so ständig. Ganz anderer Art ist das wesentliche Wissen. Es geht auf das, was das Seiende in seinem Grunde ist — auf das Sein. Das wesentliche »Wissen« meistert nicht das von ihm zu Wissende, sondern wird von diesem angegangen. Alle »Wissenschaft« z. B., aber auch anderes, ist eine kenntnismäßige Meisterung, ein Übertrumpfen und ein Überholen, wenn nicht gar ein Überrennen des Seienden. Das alles vollzieht sich in der Weise der Vergegenständlichung. Das wesentliche Wissen dagegen, die Achtsamkeit, ist das Zurücktreten vor dem Sein. Bei diesem Zurücktreten sehen wir und vernehmen wir wesentlich mehr, nämlich ganz anderes als bei dem merkwürdigen Vorgehen der neuzeitlichen Wissenschaft, das immer ein technischer Angriff auf das Seiende und ein Eingriff ist zu Zwecken der handelnden, »schaffenden«, geschäftigen und geschäftlichen »Orientierung«. Die denkende Achtsamkeit bleibt dagegen ein Aufmerken auf einen Anspruch, der nicht aus den vereinzelten Tatsachen und Vorgängen des Wirklichen kommt und den Menschen auch nicht in den Vordergründen seiner alltäglichen Umtriebe angeht. Nur dann, wenn dieser Anspruch des Seins und nicht irgendein Gegenständliches aus der Mannigfaltigkeit des Seienden uns im Wort des Parmenides anspricht, hat die Kenntnis seiner »Sätze« ein Recht. Ohne das Aufmerken auf diesen Anspruch geht auch alle Sorgfalt, die wir auf die Erläuterung dieses Denkens verwenden mögen, ins Leere. Die Reihenfolge, in der wir die einzelnen Stücke erläutern, wird aus der Deutung des Leitgedankens bestimmt, die wir den einzelnen Erläuterungen zugrunde legen, welche Deutung allerdings nur schrittweise ans Licht kommen kann.
