A indigência compele para o “íntimo entre” desse caráter indecidido. Ela ejeta pela primeira vez o decidível desse caráter indecidido. Na medida em que essa indigência se abate sobre o homem, ela o transpõe para o interior desse “entre” do ente ainda indecidido enquanto tal, do não-ente enquanto tal. Por meio dessa transposição, porém, o homem não sai apenas inalterado de um lugar em que ele se encontrava até aqui para um outro novo, como se ele fosse uma coisa que poderia ser empurrada de um local para o outro. Ao contrário: essa transposição coloca o homem pela primeira vez no interior da decisão das relações mais decisivas com o ente e o não-ente. Essas relações lhe emprestam o traço fundamental de uma nova essência. Essa indigência transpõe o homem para o início de uma fundação de sua essência. Nós dizemos, com cuidado, de uma fundação, porque nunca podemos dizer que ela seria a fundação absoluta.

Não obstante, o que é chamado aqui de transposição é o caráter essencial daquilo que conhecemos sob o nome de tonalidade afetiva ou de “sentimento”. Um hábito há muito enraizado na experiência e no dizer traz consigo o fato de interpretarmos os sentimentos e as tonalidades afetivas – assim como a vontade e o pensamento – em termos psicológico-antropológicos como ocorrências e transcursos junto a e em um corpo vivo, como vivências anímicas, como vivências que temos ou não temos. Também achamos, por isso, que seríamos “sujeitos” em si presentes à vista , que são transpostos para tal e tal tonalidade afetiva, uma vez que a “acolhemos” – quando, ao contrário, é a tonalidade afetiva que nos transpõe para tal e tal relação com o mundo, para tal e tal transfiguração ou encobrimento do mundo, para tal e tal decisão e fechamento6 de nosso si mesmo, que é essencialmente um ser-no-mundo.

A indigência compele na medida em que afina, e o afinar é um transpor, de tal modo que nos encontramos ou não nos encontramos de maneira determinada, afinados de tal e tal modo em relação ao ente, nos dispondo nós mesmos de tal e tal modo7. Se interpretarmos isso “psicologicamente” como “vivência”, tudo se perde. É por isso também que tudo aquilo que diz respeito aos gregos – sobretudo ao início – nos é tão dificilmente acessível: porque buscamos aí, de imediato, “vivências”, “traços pessoais” e “cultura”, o que não havia de modo algum naquele tempo igualmente breve e grandioso. É em virtude disso, também, que nos vemos tão completamente alijados de uma compreensão efetivamente real, por exemplo, da tragédia grega ou da poesia de Píndaro: porque as lemos e ouvimos, imediatamente também, de maneira cristã. Quando o grego fala, por exemplo, do αἰδώς, do pudor, que acomete o homem ousado e apenas ele, ou da χάρις, a graça doadora e protetora, que é em si o rigor (todas essas não passam de traduções lastimáveis e impertinentes), não está denominando nenhuma vivência do ânimo, que despontaria em um corpo vivo e que alguém poderia ter ou não. O que o grego tem em vista é indicado pelo fato de que ele denomina “deusas”, “semideusas”. Mas já estamos uma vez mais de posse de nossa explicação psicológica, na medida em que dizemos agora que ainda se trataria, de qualquer modo, da “vivência” mítica. E o mito? Uma forma determinada da vivência, do irracional.

The need compels into the “between” of this undifferentiatedness. It first casts asunder what can be differentiated within this undifferentiatedness. Insofar as this need takes hold of man, it displaces him into this undecided “between” of the still undifferentiated beings and non-beings, as such and as a whole. By this displacement, however, man does not simply pass unchanged from a previous place to a new one, as if man were a thing that can be shifted from one place to another. Instead, this displacement places man for the first time into the decision of the most decisive relations to beings and non-beings. These relations bestow on him the foundation of a new essence. This need displaces man into the beginning of a foundation of his essence. I say advisedly a foundation for we can never say that it is the absolute one.

What we are now calling displacement is the essential character of what we know under the name of disposition or feeling. A deep-rooted and very old habit of experience and speech stipulates that we interpret feelings and dispositions—as well as willing and thinking—in a psychological-anthropological sense as occurrences and processes within an organism, as psychic lived experiences, ones we either have or do not have. This also means that we are “subjects,” present at hand, who are displaced into these or those dispositions by “getting” them. In truth, however, it is the disposition that displaces us, displaces us into such and such a relation to the world, into this or that understanding or disclosure of the world, into such and such a resolve or occlusion of one’s self, a self which is essentially a being-in-the-world.

The need compels by disposing, and this disposing is a displacing in such fashion that we find ourselves disposed (or not disposed) toward beings in a definite way.1 If we interpret this psychologically, as lived experience, then everything is lost. That is why it is so difficult for us to gain access to the Greek world—especially its beginning—for we immediately seek “lived experiences,” “personalities,” and “culture”—precisely what was not there in this very great and equally short time. And that is why we are completely excluded from a real understanding of, e.g., Greek tragedy or the poetry of Pindar, for we read and hear the Greeks in psychological, even in Christian, terms. If, e.g., a Greek speaks of αιδώς, awe, which affects ones who risk and only them, or of χάρις, the grace that donates and protects, and which in itself is severity (all these translations are miserable failures), then he is not naming lived experiences or feelings which arise in an organism and which a person might “have.” The Greek indicates what he means by calling these “goddesses,” or “demi-goddesses.” But here again we are ready with our psychological explanations insofar as we would say that these are precisely mythical lived experiences. For myth is a particular form of lived experience, namely the irrational.

Die Not nötigt in das Zwischeninne dieser Unentschiedenheit. Sie wirft das Entscheidbare und zu Entscheidende dieser Unentschiedenheit erstmals auseinander. Sofern diese Not über den Menschen kommt, versetzt sie ihn in dieses Zwischen des noch unentschiedenen Seienden als solchen, des Unseienden im Ganzen. Durch diese Versetzung aber kommt der Mensch nicht einfach nur unverändert von einem bisherigen an einen neuen Ort, als wäre der Mensch ein Ding, das von einem Platz an den anderen verschoben werden könnte. Vielmehr: Diese Versetzung setzt den Menschen erstmals in die Entscheidung der entschiedensten Bezüge zum Seienden und Unseienden. Diese Bezüge (161) verleihen ihm den Grundzug eines neuen Wesens. Diese Not versetzt den Menschen in den Anfang einer Gründung seines Wesens. Wir sagen mit Bedadit einer Gründung, weil wir niemals sagen können, daß es die absolute sei.

Was hier jedoch Versetzung genannt wird, ist der Wesenscharakter dessen, was wir unter dem Namen der Stimmung oder des »Gefühls« kennen. Eine seit langem eingewurzelte Gewöhnung des Erfahrens und Sagens bringt es mit sich, daß wir die Gefühle und Stimmungen — ebenso wie Willen und Denken — »psychologisch «-anthropologisch als Vorkommnisse und Abläufe an und in einem Leib, als seelische Erlebnisse deuten, als Erlebnisse, die wir haben oder nicht haben. Wir meinen deshalb auch, wir an sich vorhandenen »Subjekte« seien es, die in die und die Stimmung versetzt werden, indem wir sie »bekommen« — wo doch umgekehrt die Stimmung uns versetzt, nämlich in den und den Weltbezug, in die und die Weltverklärung oder Weltverhüllung, in die und die Entschlossenheit und Verschlossenheit unseres Selbst, das wesentlich, ein In-der-Welt-sein ist.

Die Not nötigt, indem sie stimmt, und das Stimmen ist ein Versetzen, so daß wir so und so gestimmt uns in bestimmter Weise zum Seienden finden bzw. nicht finden und uns selbst so oder so befinden ]. Wenn man dies »psychologisch« als »Erlebnis« deutet, ist alles dahin. Deshalb ist uns auch alles Griechische — zumal des Anfangs — so schwer zugänglich, weil wir da sofort »Erlebnisse« und »Persönlichkeiten« und »Kultur« su-, chen, was alles es in jener gleich großen und gleich kurzen Zeit nicht gab. Daran liegt es auch, daß wir von einem wirklichen Verstehen z. B. der griechischen Tragödie oder der Dichtung Pindars so völlig ausgesperrt sind, weil wir psychologisch und immer zugleich auch christlich lesen und hören. Wenn z. B. der Grieche spricht von der αιδώς, der Scheu, die den Wagenden und nur ihn anfällt, oder von der χάρις, der schenkenden, behütenden Anmut, die in sich die Strenge ist (all das sind klägliche (162) und nicht treffende Übersetzungen), dann nennt er keine Gemütserlebnisse, die in einem Leib auftauchen und die man hat. Was er meint, wird dadurch angezeigt, daß er »Göttinnen«, »Halbgöttinnen« nennt. Aber schon sind wir wieder mit unserer psychologischen Erklärung bei der Hand, sofern wir jetzt sagen, das sei eben noch das mythische »Erleben«. Und der Mythos? Eine besondere Form des Erlebnisses, des irrationalen.
