Sin embargo, aquí se encuentra una afirmación metafísica de gran alcance, que debemos ahora ya anticipar. (104) En efecto, esta interpretación del ente auténtico debe explicar también, en tanto que general, precisamente, la posibilidad del ente en su totalidad. ¿Qué se dice con la tesis monadológica fundamental sobre la co-subsistencia de varios entes en la totalidad del universo? Si todo ente, si toda mónada se impulsa por sí misma, entonces esto quiere decir, que lleva consigo lo esencial de su ser, o sea, aquello hacia lo que ella se impulsa y el modo de impulsarse. Todo co-subsistir, o para decirlo mejor: todo co-impulsarse de unas mónadas por otras es esencialmente negativo en su posible relación con cada mónada concreta. Ninguna sustancia puede dar a otra su impulso, o sea, lo que es esencial en ella. Lo que puede dar es solamente la desinhibición o la inhibición e incluso esta función negativa se efectúa sólo de manera indirecta. La relación de una sustancia con otra es solamente la relación de la delimitación y, así, de la determinación negativa. Leibniz dice a este respecto con mucha claridad (ibid.): Apparebit etiam ex nostris meditationibus substantiam creatam ab alia substantia creata non ipsam vim limites (100) tantummodo ac determinationem accipere ]. Lo decisivo es el praeexistens nisus. Y Leibniz concluye: Ut alia nunc taceam ad solvendum illud problema difficile, de substantiarum operatione in se invicem, profutura ].

N. B. Leibniz llama también a la vis activa ἐντελέχεια, en referencia a Aristóteles, tanto en su Systeme nouveau (Gerh. iy 479) como en la Monadología (§ 18; Gerh. VI, 609), en este último lugar fundamentándolo: car elles ont en elles une certaine perfection (έχουσι τό εντελές·) —“pues las mónadas tienen en sí una cierta perfectio”, llevan consigo, en cierto modo, una perfección, en tanto que toda mónada (como se mostrará) ya lleva consigo lo positivo de sí misma y, por supuesto, de tal modo que, de acuerdo con su posibilidad, es el universo mismo —  Esta interpretación de la ἐντελέχεια no corresponde propiamente a la tendencia de Aristóteles. Por otra parte, en su monadología, Leibniz utiliza precisamente esta expresión dándole un nuevo significado. (105) Ya en el Renacimiento, la έντελέχεια fue traducida como perfectihabia, en el sentido leibniziano; en el § 48 de la Monadología se cita a Hermolao Bárbaro, como traductor. Este Hermolaus Barbarus (1454-1993) tradujo y comentó a Aristóteles en el Renacimiento, y también el comentario de Temistio, sin duda, con la intención de dar valor al Aristóteles griego frente a la escolástica medieval. Naturalmente su trabajo estuvo cargado de graves dificultades. Se cuenta, por ejemplo, que él, forzado por la perplejidad del significado filosófico del término έντελέχεια, había invocado al diablo para que le diera la solución. (Hoy estamos en la misma situación.)

Hasta ahora hemos explicado el concepto de vis activa en general: 1.° Vis activa significa impulso. 2.° Este carácter de impulso debe inherir en toda sustancia qua sustancia. 3.° De este impulso surge de continuo un efectuar.

Ahora llegamos por primera vez a la auténtica problemática metafísica de la substancialidad, es decir, a la cuestión por la unidad de la substancia como ente primario; pero a lo que no es sustancia Leibniz lo llama fenómeno, esto quiere decir, algo emanado, derivado. En lo que toca al problema de la unidad, hemos escuchado ocasionalmente la crítica a la res extensa cartesiana: la unidad’ no es el resultado de una acumulación, algo posterior, sino que es lo que unifica desde el comienzo. La unidad, como aquello que unifica, es activa, es vis activa, impulso: es el primum constitutivum de la unidad de la sustancia (carta a De Volder, 30, VI, 1704; Gerh. II, 267). Aquí se encuentra el problema central de la monadología, el problema del impulso y la substancialidad.

Se ha vuelto ahora visible el carácter fundamental de esta actividad; sigue siendo oscuro el modo en que precisamente algo como el impulso mismo puede unificar. La cuestión esencial siguiente es: ¿cómo se constituye, sobre la base de esta mónada, en sí misma unificada, la totalidad del universo en sus relaciones? Antes es precisa una consideración intermedia. (106)

Implied here is a metaphysical statement of the greatest importance, which we must now anticipate. For, as universal, this interpretation of genuine being must also explain the possibility of beings as a whole. What does the basic claim of the monadology imply about the way the various beings exist together in the whole universe? If each being, each monad, has its own impulse, that means it brings along with it the essentials of its being, the goal and manner of its drive. The all being present together, or better, thrusting together of the other monads, is essentially negative in its possible relation to each individual monad. No substance can confer its drive, which is its essential being, on other substances. It can merely impede or not impede, and even this function it can exercise only indirectly. The relation one substance has to another is solely restrictive and hence negative in nature. Leibniz is very clear on this point:

(84) Apparebit etiam ex nostris meditationibus, substantiam creatam ab alia substantia creata non ipsam vim agendi, sed praeexistentis jam nisus sui, sive virtutis agendi, limites tantummodo ac determinationem accipere. (Ibid.)

It will be apparent from our meditations that one created substance receives from another created substance, not the force of acting itself, but only the limits and the determination of its own pre-existent striving or power of action. (L. 433)

This nisus praeexistens is important. Leibniz concludes the article by saying: Ut alia nunc taceam ad solvendum illud problema difficile, de substantiarum operatione in se invicem, profutura (Not to speak now of other matters, I shall leave the solution of the difficult problem of the mutual action of substances upon each other for the future).

N.B. Leibniz describes vis activa also as entelechia, (entelechy) with reference to Aristotle, in, for instance, the Systeme nouveau and the Monadologie (918; G. VI, 609) (L. 453, 643, respectively), and he adds the explanation: car elles ont en elles une certaine perfection (exoisi to enteles); “for they have in them a certain perfectio or completeness.” They are complete insofar as each monad (as will be shown later) brings its positive content already with it, and brings it in such a way that the content is potentially the universe itself. This construal of entelecheia does not conform to Aristotle’s real intention. On the other hand, by giving it new meaning, Leibniz claims this very term for his monadology. Already in the Renaissance entelecheia was translated in the Leibnizian sense with perfectihabia; the Monadologie, in §48, names Hermolaus Barbarus the translator of the term. In the Renaissance, Hermolaus Barbarus (1454-93) translated and commented on Aristotle and on the commentary of Themistios, and he did so in order to restore the Greek Aristotle against medieval Scholasticism. Naturally his task harbored considerable difficulties. The story goes that, compelled by his perplexity over the philosophical meaning of the term entelecheia, he invoked the Devil to provide him with instruction. (Today we are in the same situation.)

At this point we have explained, in general, the concept of vis activa: 1) vis activa means drive; 2) this drive is supposed to be inherent in every substance as substance; 3) some accomplishing or carrying out continually arises from drive.

But now we are just coming to the real metaphysical problem of substantiality, to the question about the unity of substance as primary being. Leibniz calls that which is not substance a “phenomenon,” something derivative, a surplus. Regarding the problem of (85) unity we read passages in Leibniz criticizing Descartes’ conception of reality as extension, the res extensa. The critique claims a “unity” is not the result of an accumulation, a subsequent addition, but the unity is to be found in that which confers unity in advance. Unity as the conferral of unity is active, vis activa, drive. It is the primum constitutivum, of the unity of substance (Letter to de Volder, June 30, 1704, (G. II, 267) (L. 535). Here is the central problem of the monadology, the problem of drive and of substantiality.

The basic character of this activity has now come into view, but it remains to be seen how something like drive should itself be unity-conferring. The further important question is: On the basis of this self-unifying monad, how does the entirety of the universe constitute itself in its interconnectedness? We need first interpose another consideration.

Darin liegt aber eine metaphysische Aussage von größter Tragweite, auf die jetzt schon vorausgedeutet werden muß. (104) Denn diese Interpretation des eigentlich Seienden muß ja als allgemeine gerade auch die Möglichkeit des Seienden im Ganzen auf klären. Was ist mit der monadologischen Grundthese über das Zusammenvorhandensein mehrerer Seiender im Ganzen des Universums überhaupt gesagt? Wenn jedes Seiende, jede Monade von sich aus drängt, dann besagt dies, daß sie das Wesentliche ihres Seins, d. h. dessen, wozu sie und wie sie drängt, von sich aus mitbringt. Alles Mitvorhandensein, besser: Mitdrängen anderer Monaden ist in seinem möglichen Verhältnis zu der je einzelnen Monade wesenhaft negativ. Keine Substanz vermag der anderen ihren Drang, d. h. ihr Wesentliches zu geben. Was sie vermag, ist lediglich Enthemmung oder Hemmung, und selbst diese negative Funktion übt sie immer nur indirekt aus. Das Verhältnis der einen Substanz zur anderen ist lediglich das der Begrenzung und somit der negativen Bestimmung. Leibniz sagt in dieser Hinsicht ganz deutlich (ebd.): Apparebit etiam ex nostris meditationibus, substantiam creatam ab alia substantia creata non ipsam vim agendi, sed praeexistentis jam nisus sui, sive virtutis agendi, limites tantummodo ac determinationem accipere. Entscheidend ist der praeexistens nisus. Und Leibniz schließt: Ut alia nunc taceam ad solvendum illud problema difficile, de sub-stantiarum operatione in se invicem, profutura.

NB. Leibniz bezeichnet die vis activa auch als ἐντελέχεια, mit Hinweis auf Aristoteles z. B. im »Systeme nouveau« (Gerh. IV, 479) und in der »Monadologie« (§ 18; Gerh. VI, 609), hier mit der Begründung: car eiles ont en eiles une certaine perfection (εχουσι τὸ εντελές) – »denn die Monaden haben in sich eine gewisse perfectio«, sie tragen in sich in gewisser Weise eine Vollendung, sofern jede Monade (wie sich zeigen wird) ihr Positives schon mit sich bringt, und zwar so, daß dieses der Möglichkeit nach das Universum selbst ist. – Diese Deutung der ἐντελέχεια entspricht nicht der eigentlichen Tendenz des Aristoteles. Andererseits nimmt Leibniz eben diesen Titel in neuer Bedeutung für seine Monadologie in (105) Anspruch. Schon in der Renaissance wird ἐντελέχεια im Leibnizschen Sinne übersetzt mit perfectihabia; die »Monadologie« (§ 48) nennt Hermolaus Barbarus als Übersetzer. Dieser Hermolaus Barbarus (1454 – 93) übersetzte und kommentierte in der Renaissance Aristoteles und den Kommentar des Themistios, und zwar in der Absicht, gegen die mittelalterliche Scholastik den griechischen Aristoteles zur Geltung zu bringen. Freilich war sein Werk mit großen Schwierigkeiten verbunden. So wird erzählt, daß er – in der Not und Verlegenheit über die philosophische Bedeutung des Terminus ἐντελέχεια – den Teufel beschworen habe, ihm Aufschluß zu geben. (Wir sind heute in derselben Situation.)

Nunmehr haben wir den Begriff der vis activa im allgemeinen geklärt. 1. Vis activa bedeutet Drang. 2. Dieser Drangcharakter soll jeder Substanz qua Substanz innewohnen. 3. Diesem Drang entspringt ständig ein Vollziehen.

Jetzt aber kommen wir erst zur eigentlichen metaphysischen Problematik der Substanzialität, d. i. zur Frage nach der Einheit der Substanz als des primär Seienden; was aber nicht Substanz ist, nennt Leibniz Phänomen, das besagt Ausfluß, Abkünftiges. Bezüglich des Problems der Einheit hörten wir gelegentlich der Kritik der Descartesschen res extensa: Die »Einheit« ist nicht das Resultat einer Ansammlung, etwas Nachträgliches, sondern das im voraus Einheit Gebende. Die Einheit als einheitgebende ist aktiv, ist vis activa, Drang – er ist das primum constitutivum der Einheit der Substanz (an de Volder, 30. VI. 1704; Gerh. II, 267). Hier liegt das zentrale Problem der Monadologie, das Problem von Drang und Substanzialität.

Der Grundcharakter dieser Aktivität ist jetzt sichtbar geworden; dunkel bleibt, wie gerade so etwas wie der Drang selbst einheitgebend sein soll. Die weitere wesentliche Frage ist: Wie konstituiert sich aufgrund dieser in sich einigen Monade das Ganze des Universums in seinem Zusammenhang? Zuvor bedarf es einer Zwischenbetrachtung.
