Asimismo, en la biología se trata de reflexionar acerca de los elementos fundamentales de la vida, dejando de lado los prejuicios que llevan a concebir lo vivo como si fuera una cosa corporal y a caracterizarlo, en consecuencia, en términos mecanicistas. Incluso el vitalismo ha sido víctima de dichos prejuicios, al pretender caracterizar la fuerza vital por medio de conceptos mecánicos. Ahora se ha puesto el empeño en llegar a explicar el sentido de ese ente que es «lo vivo», «el organismo», para que sirva luego de hilo conductor de la investigación concreta. (p. 20)

In biology, likewise, the effort is being made to reflect upon the basic elements of life. It seeks to free itself from the presuppositions which take the living being as a bodily thing and so define it mechanistically. Even vitalism is caught up in these presuppositions in trying to define the life-force with mechanistic concepts. For the first time, there are now attempts to get a clear sense of “living being” and “organism” in the hope of finding a clue to guide concrete research. (p. 4)

In der Biologie macht man ebenfalls den Versuch, sich auf die Grundelemente des Lebens zu besinnen. Man versucht von Vormeinungen freizukommen, die Lebendes als Körperding gefaßt und damit mechanistisch bestimmt haben. Audi der Vitalismus ist in diesen Vormeinungen befangen, weil mit mechanischen Begriffen die Lebenskraft zu bestimmen versucht wird. Jetzt bemüht man sich, erst einmal über den Sinn dieses Seienden »Lebendes«, » Organismus « klar zu werden, um von da aus den Leitfaden für die konkrete Forschung zu gewinnen. (p. 5)
