+O quão pouco isso procede, é algo que fica claro para nós, quando consideramos mais detidamente a questão acerca do ente. Nessa questão da filosofia, o que é questionado é o que seria o ente. Pergunta-se o que é o ente, e, em verdade, enquanto tal, com vistas ao fato de que ele é um ente. A questão diretriz, portanto, pode ser formulada de maneira mais aguda como: o que é o ente enquanto tal? Essa expressão "enquanto tal" é a tradução do latim ut tale, qua tale, usada na metafísica da Idade Média tardia, que corresponde ao η da Antiguidade. Ela significa que aquilo ao que ela é acrescentada — a mesa enquanto mesa – não é pura e simplesmente objeto de uma apreensão, de uma opinião, de uma valoração ou de uma manipulação, mas que a mesa enquanto tal, isto é, na medida em que ela é uma mesa, deve ser tomada com vistas ao seu ser mesa. O ser mesa da mesa anuncia pela primeira vez aquilo que a mesa é, o seu ser-o-que, a sua essência. Inquirir um ente enquanto tal significa inquiri-lo hoc ens qua tale, na medida em que ele é esse ente, com vistas ao seu ser um ente. Essa expressão lingüística "enquanto tal" é uma expressão especificamente filosófica. Ela dá a indicação para o fato de que aquilo de que trata o discurso não é visado simplesmente apenas como ele mesmo, mas é visado desde o princípio em um aspecto insigne – com vistas à sua essência: ti to on he on. A questão acerca do ente enquanto tal não pergunta, porém, acerca desse ente ou daquele. A questão não apenas acerca do ente enquanto tal (animal, homem), mas acerca do ente enquanto tal, significa o questionar sobre aquilo que o ente enquanto ente é em geral, abstraindo-se de se o ente é precisamente uma planta ou um animal ou um homem ou Deus. Nessa questão, portanto, abstrai-se do respectivo caráter objetivo e particular. Pergunta-se sobre aquilo que advém ao ente em geral em sua dimensão mais universal possível. (p. 50-51)

+How little this is so becomes clear if we look more closely at the question concerning beings. This question of philosophy asks what beings are, just in respect of the fact that they are beings. From here the leading question asks more concisely: what are beings as such? This expression ‘as such’ translates the Latin ut tale, qua tale, as employed in the metaphysics of the late Middle Ages, and corresponds to the greek ή. It indicates that that to which it is attached — the table as such — is Not to be taken merely as an arbitrary object of conception, opinion, evaluation or possession; instead, the table is to be taken as table, that is to say, in respect of its tablehood. The being-a-table of a table announces what a table is, its what-being, its essence.

+Wie wenig das zutrifft, wird uns klar, wenn Wir die Frage nach dem Seienden uns näher besehen. In dieser Frage der Philosophie wird gefragt, Was das Seiende sei. Es wird gefragt, was das Seiende, und zwar als Seiendes, sei hinsichtlich dessen, daß es Seiendes ist. Die Leitfrage lautet daher schärfer: Was ist das Seiende als solches? Dieser Ausdruck „als solches‟ ist die Übersetzung des lateinischen ut tale, qua tale, gebraucht in der Metaphysik des Spätmittelalters, das dem ᾗ der Antike entspricht. Er bedeutet, daß dasjenige, dem er angefügt wird – der Tisch als solcher —, Nicht einfachhin und beliebig Gegenstand eines Erfassens, einer Meinung, Bewertung oder einer Handhabung ist, sondern daß der Tisch als ein solcher, d. h. sofern er Tisch ist, hinsichtlich seines Tischseins genommen Werden soll. Das Tischsein des Tisches gibt erst Kunde von dem, was der Tisch ist, seinem Was-sein, Wesen. Ein Seiendes als solches befragen heißt, es hoc ens qua tale, sofern es dieses Seiende ist, im Hinblick auf das, ein Seiendes zu Sein, zu befragen. Dieser sprachliche Ausdruck „als solches‟ ist ein spezifisch philosophischer. Er gibt die Anweisung dafür, daß das, wovon die Rede ist, nicht einfach nur Selbst gemeint, sondern von vornherein in einer ausgezeichneten Hinsicht gemeint ist – hinsichtlich seines Wesens: τί τὸ ὄν ᾗ ὄν. Die Frage nach dem Seienden als solchem fragt aber nicht nur nach diesem oder jenem. Die Frage nicht nur nach dem Seienden als solchem (Tier, Mensch), sondern nach dem Seienden als solchem, bedeutet das Fragen, was das Seiende als Seiendes überhaupt ist, abgesehen davon, ob das Seiende gerade eine Pflanze oder ein Tier oder ein Mensch oder Gott ist. In dieser Frage wird also abgesehen von dem jeweiligen Sach- und Sondercharakter des Seienden. Es ist gefragt nach dem, was dem Seienden überhaupt im allgemeinsten zukommt.
